Resources

There are many books and resources on grief, but very few that are specific to your situation. In addition to our own book, The Group: Seven Widowed Fathers Reimagine Life , we recommend the following:

Books

Laughter, Braids and Tears

Bruce Ham

Bruce was one of the members of our original support group. He wrote this book as a gift to his three daughters so that they would know how much their parents loved each other. In it, he poignantly describes how his family coped during his wife's illness and his family’s transition to life without Mom.

Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love

Matt Logelin

This memoir chronicles the author’s loss of his wife the day after their first child was born, how he confronted the overwhelming reality of a suddenly widowed parent, and how he found his way through his grief.

It's Okay to Laugh: (Crying is Cool, Too)

Nora McInerny

The first of this author's three books written after the death of her husband left her a widowed Mom.  This book blends the author's trademark humor and poignant story-telling in a way that is relatable for all.

Dream New Dreams: Reimagining My Life After Loss

Jai Pasuch

The author shares her story of caring for her husband during his very public terminal illness, her adjustment to life as a widowed mother, and her search to find happiness again.

It’s Not Raining Daddy, It’s Happy

Benjamin Brooks-Dutton

Left to raise his two-year-old son after his wife’s sudden death, the author started a blog about his life as a widowed parent. The unexpected success of his blog led to the publication of this book.

When Breath Becomes Air

Paul Kalanithi

The Bright Hour

Nina Riggs

Both of these New York Times bestsellers were written by parents prior to their deaths and may be of interest.
